BCCI optimistic about prompt IPL Trophy 2025 restart despite border tensions

IPL Trophy

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is hopeful of resuming the remainder of IPL Trophy 2025 soon, despite ongoing border tensions that led to the temporary suspension of the tournament. Since the announcement, speculation has surged over potential windows to complete the remaining matches of Season 18.

While August and September have been floated as possible options—clashing with India’s tour of Bangladesh, The Hundred in England, and the Caribbean Premier League (CPL)—BCCI insiders suggest the board is focusing on a more immediate solution, potentially restarting the IPL before the end of May.

BCCI’s Official Stand on IPL Trophy 2025 Suspension

“The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to suspend the remainder of the ongoing TATA IPL 2025 with immediate effect for one week. Further updates regarding the new schedule and venues of the tournament will be announced in due course after a comprehensive assessment of the situation in consultation with relevant authorities and stakeholders,” read the official BCCI statement.

Sources close to the matter indicate optimism within the board. “We have suspended the league for one week. We are not looking beyond that at this stage,” a senior BCCI official told Cricbuzz on Friday night (May 9). “We are serious about it. Watch out for the next three days.”

IPL Trophy 2025 Matches Could Resume in May

The BCCI is preparing a revised schedule that could see the remaining 16 matches completed within a tight 12-day window, possibly featuring multiple double-headers. This plan, however, hinges on a ceasefire or reduction in border hostilities in the coming days.

The decision to suspend the IPL was taken at a brief online Governing Council meeting held at 10:45 AM on Friday. It’s believed that the central government was consulted before the decision was made.

Foreign Player Participation Remains Uncertain

One of the challenges facing a quick IPL restart is the uncertain availability of overseas players, many of whom have already started departing or are scheduled to leave. The BCCI has left it to individual franchises to manage the situation.

Looking ahead, a restart in August would clash with The Hundred (August 5–31), where nine English players are contracted with IPL teams. Similarly, a September window would overlap with the CPL (August 14–September 21), potentially impacting the availability of eight West Indian players currently involved in the IPL. While the CPL has accommodated BCCI requests in the past, the board is currently not exploring options beyond May.

Nation’s Interests Come First, Says BCCI

Reaffirming its commitment to national interests, the BCCI emphasized, “While cricket remains a national passion, there is nothing greater than the Nation and its sovereignty, integrity, and security of our country. The BCCI remains firmly committed to support all efforts that safeguard India and will always align its decisions in the best interest of the nation.”

Safe Evacuation of Players and Staff Completed

In a discreet operation, IPL teams such as Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals, along with production crews and officials, were safely evacuated from Dharamsala to Delhi. The group was first transported to Jalandhar by bus, then boarded the Vande Bharat Express to reach Delhi, all under tight security and minimal public visibility.

As the BCCI continues to monitor the evolving situation, fans and stakeholders remain hopeful that IPL 2025 will resume soon, maintaining the spirit of the game while prioritizing national security.
