What Is the Bronco Test? BCCI Introduces a New Fitness Assessment

Bronco Test

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has reportedly introduced a new rugby-inspired fitness test called the ‘Bronco Test’ for Team India players. Former player Manoj Tiwary has called it a deliberate attempt to keep players like Rohit Sharma out of the team, while South Africa legend AB de Villiers has called it one of the “worst” (tests).

Though rugby is a much more strenuous sport than cricket, the kind of cricket being played in India these days requires a lot more endurance from the players than it was a decade ago. Hence, the Bronco Test was introduced.

What is BCCI’s new Bronco Test?

Bronco Test

The Bronco Test involves completing five consecutive shuttle-run sets without any rest, covering distances of 20m, 40m and 60m, a total of 1,200m. To make it even more interesting, this exercise has to be completed in under six minutes.

A player starts at the baseline (0 meters) and performs a series of shuttle runs, which includes:

– Running to the 20 meter marker and returning to the starting point.

– Running to the 40 meter marker and returning to the starting point.

– Running to the 60 meter marker and returning to the starting point.

When a player completes all three shuttle runs to the 60 meter marker, a set is completed. In one set, the player covers a total distance of 240 meters.

The player must complete a total of 5 sets of 240 meter circuits, covering a total distance of 1,200 meters. After completing 5 sets, the player’s time is noted.

How is it different from the Yo-Yo test

The biggest difference between the Bronco test and the Yo-Yo test is that the Yo-Yo test measures intermittent endurance, while the Bronco test measures continuous aerobic endurance and stamina. The Yo-Yo test has a short rest period, while the Bronco test has no such rest periods.
