T20I Series 2025: Fresh Faces, New Coaches & World Cup Ambitions

With the ICC T20 World Cup 2025 fast approaching, both Pakistan and Bangladesh are setting their sights on a brighter future. A fresh-looking Pakistan, now under the guidance of newly appointed head coach Mike Hesson, will host a youthful Bangladesh side led by Phil Simmons for a three-match T20I series in Lahore. The series, which begins Wednesday, is seen as a pivotal preparation platform for both teams with just eight months remaining until the global cricketing showdown in India and Sri Lanka.

What’s at Stake in the T20I Series 2025

Pakistan and Bangladesh are currently in transition, both coming off disappointing T20I campaigns in 2024. For Pakistan, the humiliation of crashing out in the first round of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 has forced a major overhaul. The team has won just three of its last 13 T20Is, two of those against minnows Zimbabwe, and they now sit eighth in the ICC T20I rankings.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has turned to former New Zealand coach Mike Hesson to rejuvenate the side. His appointment signals a shift toward a long-term plan focusing on youth and aggressive cricket. Veterans like Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Shah Afridi have all been dropped as Pakistan aims to reset its T20 blueprint ahead of the T20 World Cup 2025.

Salman Agha will now lead the national side, stepping into a captaincy role after a tough 4-1 series defeat in New Zealand earlier this year.

“We’ve been really clear around the style of play we want, and now it’s about picking players that fit that system,” said Hesson. “It’s not about rankings at the moment. It’s about building a squad with the brand of cricket we want to play.”

Bangladesh’s Youth Revolution Begins

Like Pakistan, Bangladesh has also undergone a revamp after underwhelming T20I performances. Ranked ninth in T20Is, the Tigers have managed only four wins from their last 12 matches and suffered embarrassing series losses to lower-ranked United States in 2024 and the UAE earlier this month.

With senior players like Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan, Mahmudullah, and Mushfiqur Rahim now either fully retired or absent from T20I duties, the Bangladesh Cricket Board has brought in experienced West Indian coach Phil Simmons. Simmons is focusing on grooming young talent for the long-term success of Bangladesh cricket.

We’re aiming to improve our cricket by performing well in this series, It’s about developing players who can handle pressure and adapt to the demands of international T20 cricket.”Simmons said.

However, Bangladesh will be missing key bowlers like Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman due to injuries. New pace sensation Nahid Rana also withdrew from the tour citing security concerns, following recent cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan.

What This Series Means for the T20 World Cup 2025

This T20I series serves as a foundation for both teams’ T20 World Cup 2025 campaigns. For Pakistan, it’s about rebuilding a squad that can compete at the highest level and move past the disappointment of last year. For Bangladesh, it’s about identifying match-winners and forming a cohesive unit capable of upsetting top sides on the global stage.

With both countries embracing youth and making bold strategic shifts, this series could well be remembered as the turning point in their journey toward World Cup redemption.
